By using ChipTrace, you agree to these Terms of Use.
Please do not use the service if you do not agree with them.
What does ChipTrace do?
ChipTrace helps users search pet microchip registries and lookup services.
It may also provide information about:
- A registry that may hold a record
- The chip manufacturer or distributor
- The numbering system or likely country
- Databases that could not be searched automatically
- Possible organisations to contact next
ChipTrace does not normally display an owner’s private contact details.
Permitted use
You may use ChipTrace for lawful purposes, including:
- Tracing a lost or found pet
- Checking where your own pet’s chip may be registered
- Finding the correct registry or manufacturer
- Supporting legitimate veterinary, shelter or rescue work
- Helping a finder contact the correct organisation
Prohibited use
You must not use ChipTrace:
- To harass, threaten, monitor or locate another person
- To obtain or publish private information unlawfully
- To make a false ownership claim
- To submit false or misleading information
- To interfere with ChipTrace or an external service
- To upload or send malicious code
- To bypass search limits or security controls
- To run bulk or automated searches that overload the service, avoid rate limits or breach the rules of an external registry.
- To copy or resell substantial parts of the service
- For any illegal, fraudulent or harmful purpose
No guarantee that a registration will be found
ChipTrace searches available registries and lookup services.
It cannot search every pet database in every country.
A valid microchip may not appear because:
- The chip was never registered
- The number was entered incorrectly
- The registration is very recent
- The record is held in a private or restricted system
- The registry does not allow public searches
- The external service is temporarily unavailable
- The animal is registered in another country
- The registry has closed or moved its records
- Any other technical failure
A “not found” result does not prove that the animal has no owner or no valid registration.
Search results are information, not proof
ChipTrace provides search results and guidance for information purposes.
A result does not prove:
- Who legally owns the animal
- That a registration is current
- That the registered person is the legal owner
- Where the animal currently lives
- Where the animal was born
- That a country or manufacturer clue is certain
Ownership disputes must be handled through the registry, a vet, a shelter, the police, a court or another appropriate authority.
Found animals
Finding or scanning an animal does not automatically make you its legal owner.
You must follow the local rules for found animals.
This may include contacting:
- A veterinary clinic
- An animal shelter or rescue
- The local authority
- Animal-control services
- The police
- The relevant microchip registry
Do not sell, give away or permanently rehome a found animal until the required procedures have been followed.
Animal emergencies
ChipTrace is not an emergency or veterinary service.
Contact a vet, emergency clinic, animal-control service or appropriate authority when an animal is injured, in danger or needs urgent care.
Do not delay necessary treatment while waiting for a search result.
Third-party registries and websites
ChipTrace depends on independent registries, manufacturers, lookup services and public websites.
We do not operate or control these services.
We cannot guarantee:
- That an external service will be available
- That its information is complete or correct
- That it will respond to an enquiry
- That its rules or website will remain unchanged
- That it will accept an ownership claim or transfer
Your use of an external website is also subject to that website’s own terms and privacy policy.
Availability of ChipTrace
We aim to keep ChipTrace available and working correctly.
However, the service may be interrupted, delayed, restricted or changed because of:
- Maintenance
- Technical problems
- Security concerns
- Heavy traffic
- External registry limits
- Changes made by third-party services
- Legal or operational requirements
We may limit or block access when needed to protect ChipTrace or an external provider.
Search limits and automated access
ChipTrace may limit how often searches can be made.
This helps protect external registries and keeps the service available for genuine users.
Automated searches, scraping, bulk lookups or attempts to avoid these limits are not allowed without written permission.
Articles and country guides
We make reasonable efforts to keep our articles and country guides accurate.
However, laws, registries, contact details and procedures can change.
The information on ChipTrace is general guidance.
It is not legal or veterinary advice.
Confirm important requirements with the relevant government authority, registry, vet or another official source.
Intellectual property
Unless stated otherwise, the ChipTrace name, design, original text, graphics, software and search presentation belong to ChipTrace or the relevant rights holder.
You may:
- Read and share links to our public pages
- Quote short sections with clear credit and a link to the source
- Use the service for personal, veterinary, shelter or rescue work
You may not copy, reproduce, republish, sell or use substantial parts of ChipTrace to create another service without written permission.
Links to ChipTrace
You may link to public ChipTrace pages.
The link must not falsely suggest a partnership, endorsement or sponsorship.
Do not present ChipTrace or its search results as your own service.
Limitation of liability
ChipTrace is provided free of charge and on an “as available” basis.
To the extent permitted by law, we are not responsible for loss or damage caused by:
- An incorrect or incomplete third-party record
- An unavailable or delayed search
- A registry or manufacturer failing to respond
- Outdated contact details in a registry
- An incorrect microchip number entered by a user
- Reliance on an unconfirmed country or manufacturer clue
- The actions of another user or third party
- Technical problems
Nothing in these Terms removes rights or liability that cannot legally be excluded.
Suspension or refusal of access
We may suspend, restrict or refuse access when we reasonably believe that someone:
- Has broken these Terms
- Is abusing the search service
- Is placing ChipTrace or an external service at risk
- Is trying to access private information unlawfully
- Is using automated tools without permission

Changes to ChipTrace or these Terms
We may update the website, its features or these Terms.
The latest version will appear on this page with its revision date.

Any mandatory consumer rights that apply to you remain unaffected.
